After doing some research, I met head-on with the research already performed by other members of the extended Woodward
family. Scott Scheibe helped tremendously by providing the link we needed between our family, and Capt. Henry Woodward.
The link between our family goes through our paternal grandfather, Merle (also written as Muriel, Merrell) Woodward. His
father was William(Fain) Woodward, whose father was Jesse L. Woodward, whose father was William Woodward, whose father was
James Woodward, whose father was Jesse Woodward, and whose father was Capt. Henry Woodward.
During reseach, I found that names have been altered in documents, mostly by using nicknames and mispelled phonetic
variations. We have seen this with Merle Woodward, who in the marriage records of Big Stone Gap, VA, was mispelled 3 times
on the same document (Merle, Muriel, Merrell). William Woodward (father of Merle) signed on his 1917 draft card "Fain", yet
in the 1920 census, wrote "William". His wife, Macie(Parson's) was written as Mazie at one point. This has been a source of
frustration for me, trying to connect the dots of people in our family.
